Impeached Lagos State House Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, said he has no intention to sanction his “brothers and sisters” who voted to oust him from office, as he returned to the assembly complex on Thursday while proclaiming himself Speaker of the House.

Mr Obasa, in company of aides, said his impeachment on January 13 —after an explosive report by Peoples Gazette detailing corruption allegations against him— did not follow due process, hence cannot stand. The embattled Lagos legislator said he was not against impeachment, as long as it followed terms stipulated in the constitution.

He added that there was no bad blood between him and over 30 lawmakers who voted tfor his impeachment, adding that he regarded them as his “brothers and sisters.”

“All my colleagues have always been my brothers, they have always been loyal, they have been dedicated, strong commitment to serve the people of Lagos and we will continue to do that together,” the lawmaker told reporters on Thursday.

“I have no reservation, nothing against anybody and no intention of victimisation,” Mr Obasa assured his colleagues who feared retribution should he get reinstated as speaker.

“Our party is one. We are all brothers and sisters,” Mr Obasa said. “It is a family party.”

Mr Obasa’s impeachment on January 13 received an overwhelming 32 of 38 votes as the lawmakers soon pitched their tent with Mojisola Meranda, voting her to become the first female speaker of the House.

Mr Obasa was in the U.S. when he received the news of his impeachment. Operatives of anti-graft commission, EFCC, vowed to pounce on him when he lands in Nigeria, having concluded their investigations with numerous questionable findings.

But the EFCC agents were forced to stand down after First Lady Remi Tinubu intervened and asked for Mr Obasa to be left alone due to his political influence in Agege and environs which could help retain President Bola Tinubu in office for a second term.

The president asked former APC National Leader Bisi Akande and a former Ogun State governor Gbenga Osoba to wade into the matter and resolve the crisis.

While there has been no statement to shed light on resolutions reached, Mr Obasa’s confident return to the assembly complex and self-proclamation as speaker were strong tells that he had Messrs Akande and Osoba’s backing to get reinstated.

Ms Meranda’s security detail has also been withdrawn while that of Mr Obasa got restored fuelling speculations that he was back as speaker.
