The Qassim Region in Saudi Arabia reported steady expansion in hydroponic farming, as advanced agricultural technologies become a strategic tool for boosting crop yields while conserving water.

The trend aligns closely with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 priorities, which place strong emphasis on sustainability, food security, and the efficient use of natural resources.

Hydroponics is a modern cultivation method that allows plants to grow without soil, relying instead on nutrient-rich water solutions that deliver essential elements directly to plant roots.

This approach supports faster and more controlled plant development while significantly reducing water consumption compared to traditional farming, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Several hydroponic systems are now in operation across Qassim to suit different crops and production goals.

The nutrient film technique ensures a continuous flow of nutrients over plant roots, encouraging rapid growth.

Floating systems allow roots to develop directly in nutrient solutions, improving productivity while minimising water loss.

Inert growing media, including peat moss and perlite, are widely used to stabilise roots and optimise moisture and airflow, particularly for fruit-bearing crops.

More advanced aeroponic systems, in which roots are misted with nutrients, offer some of the highest levels of water efficiency and output.

These technologies are mainly deployed in greenhouses and specialised farming facilities, enabling year-round cultivation and precise environmental control.

As a result, producers benefit from lower reliance on chemical pesticides, higher product quality, and reduced exposure to soil-related diseases.
