How mobile gaming is driving online casino growth in Nigeria

The gaming industry in Nigeria is one of Africa’s biggest gaming markets.

• April 25, 2025

The gaming industry in Nigeria is one of Africa’s biggest gaming markets. According to a report by Statista, the total revenue of the Nigerian gaming market was projected to reach $2.59 billion in 2025. The same report stated that the market was expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.61% to reach $ 3.60 billion by 2029. Now, mobile gaming is a huge reason why this market has been and will continue to dominate the African region. But why is that?

You see, smartphones have been increasing globally at a rapid rate, with Nigeria at the centre of it all. Reports indicate that market penetration in the country is expected to reach 66% by 2025. With this, many online gaming enthusiasts are turning to mobile gaming due to the convenience that smartphones offer. Many online casino platforms are being optimised for mobile gaming as more people are moving towards using mobile phones.

But now, let’s try to understand how playing mobile games is instrumental in the growth of the online casino market in Nigeria.

Accessibility and convenience

One of the things that makes online casino gaming popular among many gamers in Nigeria is convenience. The fact that you can access your favourites without ever leaving your house is a dream come true for casino lovers. However, a small percentage of people have access to computers and laptops, the main devices used for casino gaming. For instance, a report by Statista showed that in 2022, only 30% of households owned computers.

Now, as mentioned above, many online casinos have optimised their platforms for mobile gaming, meaning that by just having your phone, you have access. With more than 97 million people owning smartphones, the market is even larger. Just imagine how simple it is to whip out your smartphone, whether you are on a bus or an aeroplane and start gaming whenever you feel like it.

Right now, even if a player has a PC that they can use, they would prefer to play on their smartphone. As more people turn to mobile gaming, the online casino gaming industry is gaining popularity and attracting more players.

Improved gambling conditions

Improved gambling conditions have been instrumental in the wide acceptance of online casinos. These gambling platforms offer a variety of incentives, such as welcome bonuses, promotions, loyalty programs, and even the ability to buy bonuses, which makes gaming easier.

The use of bonuses has been crucial in attracting new users to the online casino world. Mobile-specific bonuses have been a game-changer in this universe. These give a unique advantage to mobile gamers, encouraging the use of mobile gaming devices for online casino activities.

Also, the mobile optimisation of games has made the gaming experience much easier. Software developers are making these platforms easy and seamless to navigate. A swipe here, a touch there, and you can navigate the whole platform in seconds. Another great thing is that most of these platforms are seamlessly integrated with various payment methods, making it easy to make deposits and withdrawals with just a click.

Touchscreen controls for mobile play

Playing casino games on your mobile phone is more satisfying and tactile than using your PC. This has also improved the gaming experience for many casino players and helped online casinos appeal to Nigerians over time.

One of the biggest reasons is the use of touchscreen controls that smartphones usually have. You are allowed to control the actions on your screen, making it feel more natural than any other mode of playing.

Say, for instance, you are playing roulette. Spinning the roulette wheel with a swipe of your finger is way more fun than hitting a key on your computer keyboard. You feel more connected to the game, even if you don’t consciously realise it. Also, swiping the screen to spin the slot wheel or tapping the screen to reveal your cards in baccarat or poker is more engaging than pressing the keyboard buttons.

This enhanced online gaming experience has given more players the thrill of playing online casino games, leading to the market’s massive growth.

Gaming despite advertising restrictions

It is quite interesting that the online casino market in Nigeria is going up at a speedy rate, even though gambling advertisements are facing restrictions. Earlier in January, Google announced that Nigeria would be subject to its country-specific policies and banned gambling-related products on the search engine.

This ban swept across the industry, from educational materials, vouchers, and coupon codes to betting tips and odds.

However, in April, Google banned licensed operators from promoting lotteries, sports betting, online casinos, and bingo, especially in Lagos. The operators that have been allowed must comply with the conditions laid out by the LSLGA. This is such a relief for players in the state as now that the playing field is at a higher level, operators are able to engage users in a more lively, strategic way.

In conclusion

We can see that the online gaming industry in Nigeria is growing at a good rate, despite the country’s restrictions. One of the reasons behind this growth is the widespread use of mobile gaming, which has brought more convenience and improved gaming experiences to the online casino market. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Nigerian casino market.
