Gunmen, on Saturday evening, killed the chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMATA), Enugu State, Stephen Aniago, and drove off with his car.

The public relations officer of the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a press release on Sunday.

Mr Ndukwe stated the gunmen shot and killed the market chairman at about 8:20 p.m. along Amechi Road, Enugu.

He said efforts were ongoing by the command’s operatives to apprehend the assailants.

Mr Ndukwe said an investigation revealed that the armed hoodlums who operated “in a Toyota Corolla car, double-crossed and shot the victim, making away with his blue-coloured Toyota Corolla car.”

“He was taken to the hospital by police operatives who hastened to the scene but was confirmed dead by doctors. His corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and further investigative actions,” the command’s spokesperson added.

The commissioner of police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, ordered the command’s tactical squads, already on the trail of the assailants, to deploy all the intelligence and operational resources at their disposal to hunt the criminals down.

Mr Kanayo also ordered the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the State CID to investigate and unravel the circumstances that led to Mr Aniago’s death.

The police commissioner assured the public that the police would ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act were brought to book.
