Civil servants in Abia State will start receiving the new N70,000 minimum wage from October 2024, the state government has said.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, stated this at a press briefing on Tuesday following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, on Monday.

Mr Kanu said, “The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence.’’

Stating the government’s resolve to improve welfare of its workers, Mr Kanu noted that the governor was also willing to exceed the nationally approved minimum wage, if possible.

He said, “If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it.”
