The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe State branch, trained police investigators and prosecutors on Saturday to enhance their technical competencies and improve criminal justice outcomes in the state.

Benjamin Sati, the NBA chairman in Gombe, said the training aimed to improve the quality of criminal investigations and judicial outcomes through enhanced officer capabilities.

Mr Sati stated that the programme would equip officers with skills to gather evidence, interview suspects and witnesses, and conduct thorough investigations for successful prosecutions.

He added that the training would guide officers in aligning investigative procedures with established legal best practices.

According to him, participants would also learn how to avoid errors hindering prosecutions and justice.

“This initiative forms part of the association’s wider commitment to strengthening a fair, effective criminal justice system in Gombe State,” he said.

Mr Sati noted that poor investigations weaken cases and diminish public confidence in the judiciary.

“This workshop addresses knowledge gaps and encourages a culture of professionalism among law enforcement officers,” he added.

He explained that prosecutors often encounter challenges in court due to investigative omissions that result in acquittals of individuals who might otherwise be convicted.

The NBA chairman said the association plans to extend similar training to other paramilitary agencies involved in investigations and prosecutions in the state.

Bello Yahaya, Gombe State Police Commissioner, praised the NBA for initiating the training.

Mr Yahaya said the workshop was vital in boosting conviction rates and ensuring a more effective administration of justice.

“The quality of investigation and prosecution is central to securing convictions and upholding justice,” the commissioner noted.

He said the training allows valuable collaboration between the police and legal professionals to improve the criminal justice process.

Mr Yahaya commended the NBA leadership for the initiative, saying it would strengthen professionalism, purpose, and commitment among personnel.
