Some residents of Oyo State on Wednesday blocked Eleyele and Sango roads in the Ibadan metropolis over the rejection of old naira notes by traders and motorists.

The demonstrations come as the Central Bank reiterated that old 200, 500 and 1000 denominations of the naira notes had ceased to be a legal tender as of February 10.

The protesters blocked Eleyele junction in the Ibadan North-West Local Government Area of Oyo State, causing heavy gridlock on the road.

On February 6, some residents in Ibadan protested against scarcity of fuel and new naira notes at the entrance gate of University of Ibadan.

On February 8, the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of the February 10 deadline set by the CBN to end use of the old notes as legal tender, pending the determination of a suit filed by three states against the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Supreme Court, however, adjourned ruling on the suit till February 22, dashing hopes of many trapped Nigerians seeking a quick resolution to the monetary hullabaloo.
