The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified campaign to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by five per cent, an official has said.

The FRSC sector commander, Kano command, Umar Matazu, disclosed this at the 2024 ember month press conference on Wednesday at the state command in Kano.

Mr Matazu, represented by the deputy corps commander and sector’s head of operations, Hussaini Suleiman, said: “In line with FRSC 2024 cooperate strategic goal-one is to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by five per cent.

“FRSC has undertaken several proactive measures to ensure the safety of road users during the ember months.

“Over 1,500 personnel, including regular marshals and special marshals, have been deployed to critical routes across Kano State.

“These personnel are supported by a fleet of 30 patrol vehicles, five ambulances and one heavy-duty tow truck on key highways.”

Mr Matazu said this would ensure smooth traffic flow, rapid response to emergencies and effective enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.

The sector commander urged passengers to avoid reckless drivers and take responsibility for their safety.

He observed that the theme of this year’s campaign, “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” was apt and commendable.

The sector commander further explained that the pressures of ember months should not compel drivers to engage in reckless driving, as “no journey is worth a life lost.

“We are committed to maintaining constant patrols, enforcing speed limits and ensuring that drivers comply with road safety laws, such as the use of seat belts, non-use of mobile phones while driving, and moderate speed limits, among others.”
