DOHS Cares Foundation and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) signed an MoU on Friday to combat femicide through legislation.

A statement by Ololade Ajayi, founder of DOHS, Olalade Ajayi, said the deal aims to address femicide by pushing for laws that support prevention, justice and accountability.

Femicide refers to the intentional killing of women or girls, often by intimate partners, relatives, or known individuals, due to gender-based motives.

Ms Ajayi described the MoU as a historic move to protect women whose lives are often taken without consequences for the perpetrators.

She said Nigeria’s legal system lacked specific provisions for femicide, leaving many victims unprotected and justice delayed or denied.

Ms Ajayi added that the partnership would support research-led policy development and galvanise political commitment to ending femicide nationwide.

She noted that the collaboration reflected growing advocacy and the urgent need for stronger legislative action against gender-based violence.

At the event, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, NILDS Director-General, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.

Mr Sulaiman stressed NILDS’ role in preventing violence against women and girls through legal and institutional frameworks.
