Flooding: Akwa Ibom assembly urges govt on preventive measures

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has urged the state Ministry of Environment to adopt preventive flood management strategies to protect coastal communities vulnerable to flooding as the rainy season begins.
This was sequel to a motion presented at the plenary on Friday by the member representing the Etim Ekpo/Ika state constituency, Mfon Idung.
Mr Idung said there was an urgent need for proactive flood management measures in anticipation of the upcoming rainy season.
The lawmaker said flood incidents have continued to claim lives as well as the property of residents, thereby casting a shadow over the socio-economic prospects of the state.
He urged the government to be conscious of the environment by initiating several intervention projects to curb flooding.
Mr Idung warned that if the anticipated heavy rains commence without putting necessary measures in place, the state may be exposed to extensive property damage and loss of lives.
Moses Essien, the member representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency, seconded the motion.
After careful deliberations, the speaker of the House, Udeme Otong, directed the House clerk, Nsikak Abasi Orok, to communicate the resolution to relevant authorities for immediate action.
Meanwhile, the House tasked the Akwa Ibom State Waste Protection and Management Agency (AKSEPMA) to maintain and initiate clearing of drainage systems.
