A first tranche of 100,000 mpox vaccine doses donated by the European Commission to affected countries will arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday.

According to a statement, the commission and EU member states have pledged a total of 566,500 doses to halt the spread of the virus.

“We know from the COVID-19 pandemic that we can only fight health threats such as mpox by working in partnership and global solidarity across borders,” said EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides.

Brussels plans to support affected countries in the fight against the disease with around 10 million euros (11 million U.S. dollars) in the coming months and has deployed two epidemiologists to the region.
