Finidi faces fans’ fury, insults over misfiring Super Eagles

Irate fans have bombarded the comment sections of Super Eagles head coach Finidi George’s Instagram page with insults and calls for dismissal following Nigeria’s shocking 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in their fourth Group C match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday.
The defeat has cast a shadow over Nigeria’s aspirations of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With only three points earned so far in the qualifiers, Nigeria finds themselves in a precarious fifth position in their group, behind Zimbabwe who has a game in hand.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles’ performance in this crucial game, Nigerian football fans have left direct and unflattering comments under posts belonging to the ex-Enyimba coach on Instagram. Many have resorted to insulting the 53-year-old as they demand the Nigeria Football Federation to terminate his contract immediately.
“You better resign in peace so that problem nor go dey because you too dull I just dey tell you my mind if not,” Instagram user @oghenrej said.
Another netizen, @horlayemi_003, said, “Oga you no get sense you no sabi anything leave job.”
“Tunibu or Finidi, which one do they call you? You don’t even look like a coach. How did you get here nah? Who teach you how to coach people have you coached yourself?” hemdmajorderimaomeaku wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Finidi George and his team have more than 200 days to prepare for the next round of the qualifiers, which is scheduled to take place in March 2025.
The Eagles are now in a tight position, and they must win their remaining six games to qualify for the expanded 48-team World Cup.
