The federal government has inaugurated the first barracks for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Adamawa 35 years after the agency’s establishment.

Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday in Yola, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, emphasised that the project goes beyond providing accommodation.

Mr Fagbemi said it also strengthens the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

He stated that the barracks represent the government’s commitment to justice and law enforcement by ensuring NDLEA personnel have the security and resources to perform their duties effectively.

“The fight against drug abuse is a fight for the nation’s future, protecting young people from the devastating effects of substance abuse,” Mr Fagbemi said.

He urged NDLEA officers residing in the barracks to see the investment as a call to duty and remain resolute in their mission to create a safer society free from drug-related crimes.

The minister commended President Bola Tinubu for ensuring the project’s completion and acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the initiative.

Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Marwa (rtd.), the chairman and chief executive officer of NDLEA, described the commissioning as a long-overdue intervention that would enhance the safety and well-being of NDLEA personnel.

He noted that many officers had previously been vulnerable to attacks due to the absence of secure accommodation, leading to tragic losses in the line of duty.

Mr Marwa noted that the barracks, located on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, has modern office structures, a detention facility, schools, shopping and worship centres, and secured residential quarters.

“The accommodation comprises lodges for state and zonal commanders, 80 one-bedroom flats, 120 two-bedroom flats, and 60 three-bedroom flats, among other essential facilities,” he stated.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was represented by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Humanitarian Services, Amos Pirimbu.

Mr Fintiri described the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to securing the nation’s future by addressing drug-related challenges.

He noted that the initiative would serve as a crucial step in protecting young Nigerians from the dangers of illicit drugs and ensuring national stability.

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, represented by AIG Rex Dundun, Director of the Law Enforcement Liaison Office (NSA), reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a conducive working environment for security agencies.

Mr Ribadu commended NDLEA officers for their relentless fight against drug trafficking and abuse, urging them to uphold professionalism and resilience.

Dignitaries from across the country, security personnel, members of the national and state assemblies, and traditional rulers attended the event.
