Federal, state agencies clamp down on unlicensed motorcyclists in North-West

Federal and state agencies in North-West say they are taking measures to ensure that unlicensed motorcycles do not ply highways in their states.
The agencies officers said apart from boosting the revenue generation capacity of states, ensuring that motorcycles were licenced was desirable, considering the security challenges in those states.
Sector commander of Federal Road Safety Corps in Kaduna, Hafiz Mohammed, said unlicensed motorcycles were not allowed to operate on any road in the country.
Yusuf Haruna, sector commander, FRSC in Kebbi, said his command was conducting routine sensitisation for motorcycle owners to register the same.
Mr Haruna said that the campaigns were being conducted alongside routine patrols, to apprehend riders of unlicensed motorcycles, just as culprits were fined N10,000 for not doing the needful.
On his part, the executive chairman of Kebbi State Board of Internal Revenue Services, Iliyasu Arzika-Jega, said they had intensified efforts to register motorcycles as a way to boost the state’s IGR.
Sector Commander of FRSC in Zamfara, Iro Danladi, said concerted efforts were being made to check the use of motorcycles without licence.
FRSC sector commander in Sokoto, Kaugama Kabo, said the Corps had been apprehending persons riding unregistered motorcycles, and records an average of 25 to 30 defaulters every week.
Ali Tanimu, sector commander of FRSC in Katsina, said the corps was working in synergy with the State Board of Internal Revenue Service to ensure commercial and non-commercial motorcyclists had licences and other relevant documents.
He said the operators had been given till June 1, to comply or be prosecuted.
The FRSC in Kano wants to commence special patrols to impound unlicensed and unregistered motorcycles in the state.
The sector commander, Zubairu Mato, said the operation would be conducted from June 1 to August 31, noting that the command carries out periodic patrols across the state to arrest defaulters.
