Factional Rivers Assembly speaker, Edison Ehie, resigns

Factional Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ogerenye Ehie, has resigned his position and as a member representing Ahaoda East Constituency 2.
Mr Ehie announced his decision in a resignation letter dated December 29, 2023 and addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Although he didn’t state his reason for the decision, Mr Ehie thanked his fellow lawmakers for the good working relationship they had with him and also appreciated his constituency for supporting him throughout his stay in the assembly.
The letter read, “This is to formally notify you of my voluntary resignation as speaker and member of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, representing Ahoada – East Constituency II with effect from the date of this letter.
“I wish to deeply appreciate my colleagues and the people of my constituency for the rare opportunity to serve and hope to continue to give my utmost best in service to Rivers State subsequently.’’
His resignation may not be unconnected with the peace arrangement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the political feud between Governor Similanayi Fubara and his predecessor and Minster of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
There are also unconfirmed reports that following his resignation, Mr Ehie may soon be announced as the governor’s Chief of Staff.
Before the crisis in the state started, Mr Ehie was the majority leader of the assembly. He was however suspended by the House following the failed impeachment process initiated against the governor before he was later elected as speaker.
