Meta Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced that the company will ditch fact-checkers moderating content on its platforms and adopt community notes similar to the one already existing on rival platform X.

“We’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes, similar to X,” Mr Zuckerberg said in a video on Tuesday.

“We’re gonna get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms,” he added.

This is the latest in the numbers of sweeping policy changes Meta has embarked recently that will significantly change the way posts, videos and other content are moderated on Facebook and Instagram.

Before now, Meta had heavily relied on its fact-checkers to moderate content on its platforms and they had been accused by some sections of the public of using the means to suppress certain contents unfavourable to the left wing.

However, recent decisions, which included the appointment of President-elect Donald Trump’s ally and UFC CEO Dana White as a new board member at Meta, have shown a significant ideological shift within the company to the right.
