Experts advocate ethical AI integration in journalism

Communication experts have called for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism and mass communication, stressing the need to uphold ethical standards and best practices.
This appeal was made during a seminar titled “Journalism Ethics in the Era of AI,” organised by mass communication students at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi on Friday.
Presenting his paper, Ahmed Kaigama, vice chairman of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), emphasised the need to balance truth, fairness, and responsibility in media reportage.
He warned against unethical AI usage and emphasised the need for thorough research and enhanced media literacy.
Supporting these views, Bello Beli acknowledged AI’s permanence in modern journalism.
He urged practitioners to verify machine-generated content to avoid errors and maintain credibility.
Silas Shentikwak, news editor at Albarka Radio Bauchi, underscored the benefits of AI in research.
He encouraged students to harness AI’s potential responsibly and proposed integrating AI applications into the multimedia journalism curriculum to equip students with relevant skills.
Emma James, a participant, expressed enthusiasm about the insights gained.
He pledged to apply the knowledge in his studies and future career, with a commitment to promoting ethical journalism in the AI-driven media landscape.
