Ex-Portugal coach Fernando Santos named Poland national team manager

Former Portugal national team head coach Fernando Santos has been appointed as the new head coach of the Polish national team.
He replaced Czesław Michniewicz, who left the position shortly after Poland’s poor run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The European championship-winning coach’s appointment was announced at an unveiling ceremony held at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in the country’s capital city of Warsaw.
The Polish football federation also announced that the former Benfica manager signed for two qualifying cycles, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
Portugal sacked the 68-year-old manager after he was involved in a rift with forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Qatar, coupled with the elimination from the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals by Morocco.
He won the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League during his tenure as the head coach of the Portuguese national team.
Shortly after his latest appointment, the Portuguese said, “I would like to thank Mr President for trusting me and my colleagues. It is a great honour for us because we are talking about a great country with an extremely rich history and culture.”
Mr Santos added, “Polish football also has a history that has marked my generation.”
