Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has returned to Luton Town, this time as the club’s new manager.

The former England international was announced on Monday via the club’s website as the third-tier side’s new boss, beginning his professional managerial career with Chris Powell as his assistant.

Wilshere succeeds Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked earlier this month after less than a year in charge at Kenilworth Road.

Bloomfield’s time at the club ended following a rocky start to the current English League One season.

The role kicks off Wilshere’s first full-time managerial role, taking over a Luton side currently 11th in the table after suffering back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship.

Describing the opportunity, Wilshere said it was “a huge honour and a privilege” to be appointed Luton Town manager. He reflected on his connection to the club, recalling his early days as a young player.

“It feels like a full-circle moment for me,” he said. “I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it’s fate that my first full-time managerial position is at this club.”

He makes his way back to Kenilworth Road after taking charge of coaching positions in Arsenal’s academy, with a short opportunity as Norwich City’s interim manager for the final two games of the season.

Luton chief executive Gary Sweet said Wilshere’s “passion, intelligence, and modern approach to the game” make him the perfect fit for the club’s next chapter.

He added that Wilshere’s deep connection to Luton and “commitment to developing talent” stood out during the selection process, expressing confidence that “his journey with the Hatters is only just beginning.”

Wilshere began his football journey at Luton Town’s academy before joining Arsenal at the age of nine. He went on to make his senior debut for the Gunners at 16, winning two FA Cups and making nearly 200 appearances for the club.

After leaving Arsenal, he had spells with West Ham, Bournemouth, and Danish side Aarhus before hanging up his boots in 2022.

For England, he earned 34 caps and featured at both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.
