EU to respond to Trump’s tariff announcement, says French FM

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Monday that France and the European Union would respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff announcement.
Mr Barrot told TF1 television that European countries should not hesitate to defend their interests in the face of potential U.S. tariff threats, adding that starting a commercial war is in no one’s best interests.
“(Imposing tariffs) is already what Donald Trump did in 2018, and we responded. We will again respond,” said Mr Barrot.
Mr Trump told reporters on Sunday that he would announce new 25-per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into the U.S., with an official statement to be made.
Mr Trump also said he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” as soon as Tuesday to align with those of its trading partners.
