Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday.

Her grandson, Joseph P. Kennedy III, confirmed the news on X, formerly Twitter, stating that her death was due to complications from a stroke she suffered the previous week.

Mrs Kennedy was a towering figure in American political and philanthropic life.

Born on April 11, 1928, in Chicago, Mrs Kennedy married the politician in 1950, becoming an integral part of the famed Kennedy family.

The couple had 11 children, and after Mr Kennedy’s assassination in 1968 during his presidential campaign, she dedicated herself to continuing his legacy.

Following Mr Kennedy’s death, she focused on activism and human rights work, notably founding the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation.

Mrs Kennedy’s life was marked by tragedies, but she remained a symbol of endurance for the family.

Though less publicly engaged in her later years, her influence continued to shape the family’s political legacy.

Her grandchildren, including Joseph P. Kennedy III, have followed in her footsteps by engaging in public service.

She left behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
