On Monday, a Jos Magistrates’ Court sentenced an 18-year-old electrician, Abubakar Mohammed, to one year in prison for attempting to steal an air conditioner from a shop.

The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Ms Bokkos gave the convict an option of a fine of N30,000.

She also ordered him to pay N90,000 in compensation to the complainant and, in default, spend two years in prison.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Nasarawa Gwong Police Station on March 6 by Johnson John, the complainant.

The police said the convict went to the shop with his friends, now at large and attempted to steal the AC but, in the process, spoilt the pipe valued at N90,000 before he was caught.
