EFCC grants Obiano administrative bail, says arrest not political

On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) granted a former governor of Anambra, Willie Obiano, administrative bail.
EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at the fifth Annual General Assembly of the Network of National Anti-corruption institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) in Abuja.
Mr Bawa said the former governor was still in its custody since he had yet to meet his bail conditions.
“Although, he has been granted bail, and we are waiting for him to perfect his bail conditions.
“So far, he has been cooperating with us, and everything is going well,” the EFCC boss said.
Mr Bawa also insisted that there was nothing political about Mr Obiano’s investigation.
“There is nothing political about the investigation. You know what the EFCC stands for.
“That is all we have been doing, and that is what we will continue to do,” Mr Bawa said.
Mr Obiano was arrested on Thursday at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos and brought to Abuja on Friday morning.
The arrest came hours after handing over to the newly sworn in Anambra Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
A source in the anti-graft agency said the EFCC was investigating Mr Obiano for allegedly withdrawing public funds amounting to N37 billion.
The source also disclosed that Mr Obiano mismanaged N5 billion meant for the federal government-funded Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P).
