EFCC admits its officer leaked viral video of Obiano in custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday said its officer leaked the viral video of former Anambra state governor Willie Obiano in its custody.
The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement on Monday, stating that the errant officer was already being subjected to disciplinary action.
“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a trending video showing the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano in the custody of the Commission.
“A discreet investigation ordered upon discovery of the leak has revealed the errant officer behind the odious act and he is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” the statement reads.
The EFCC said that it was distancing itself from the said video, adding that it was “completely at variance with the established Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC.”
The viral video of Mr Obiano in EFCC custody has elicited nationwide condemnation from Nigerians who criticised the agency’s unprofessionalism in always resorting to media trial of accused persons.
Mr Obiano was arrested on Thursday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, barely six hours after handing over to his successor Charles Soludo.
He was earlier on his way to the United States, but was brought to Abuja on Friday morning after his arrest.
Sources in the anti-graft agency said he’s being quizzed for withdrawing N37 billion of state funds in cash, among other alleged grafts.
