The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a 12-hour restriction of vehicular movement during Saturday’s off-cycle election in Edo State.

In a press release on Friday, the public relations officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the security measure is to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible exercise.

“In preparation for the election, the IGP has ordered the restriction of all vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day,” said Mr Adejobi.

However, he said, “Exceptions will be made for essential services, including accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders.”

Mr Addejobi stated that the police boss also banned security aides from accompanying VIPs to their polling units.

“Unauthorised security personnel and quasi-security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election, and the use of sirens by unauthorised vehicles is strictly forbidden to ensure a calm environment for voters,” he added.

He said the IGP has also ordered special attention be provided for persons with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the aged, and those with mobility challenges to ensure that polling stations in urban and rural settings are accessible to everyone.

The IGP urged residents to report suspicious activities that may jeopardise the integrity of the election or cause disorderliness and warned them against prank calls to designated numbers.

The IGP urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters “to conduct themselves responsibly and in compliance with electoral laws, as any violations or attempts to disrupt the electoral process will be met with the full extent of the law.”

He reaffirmed the dedication of the police to promoting a safe and democratic environment.
