Edo Assembly passes bill to establish nursing college, others

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish the Sancta Maria Catholic College of Nursing Science, Department of Midwifery, Uzairue, in Edo.
The house also passed a bill for a law to establish the St. Philomena College of Nursing Science.
The passage of the two bills was sequel to the consideration of the reports of the house standing committee on health.
The bills, however, sailed through after clause-by-clause consideration at the committee of the whole and the speaker, Marcus Onobun, directed that clean copies of the two bills be sent to the governor for his assent.
Also, a bill to establish the John Odigie Oyegun Service Academy passed through second reading on the house floor.
Leading the debate for the passage of the bill, House Majority Leader Henry Okhuarobo, a member representing (PDP Ikpoba-Okha) said the passage of the bill would give a legal framework to the already existing institution.
Also, the member representing (PDP Akoko-Edo 1), Yekini Idaiye, said the academy would help government policies be well interpreted.
Mr Idaiye noted that the academy would equip workers with research tools to enhance effective service delivery.
According to him, training and retraining of workers is needed for good performance.
House Deputy Speaker Roland Asoro, in his contribution, said the academy would provide an opportunity for workers to improve themselves.
Other lawmakers unanimously supported the passage of the bill.
Meanwhile, the house has approved the harmonisation of the monthly pension of retired heads of local government in line with section 64 of the Local Government Law, 2000, as amended.
