ECOWAS advances regional action on climate-related human mobility

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has concluded a three-day meeting with representatives of member states to strengthen regional cooperation on climate-induced migration and displacement.
The meeting, which began on Tuesday and ended on Thursday, was held to discuss how floods, drought, desertification, land degradation and other environmental hazards were driving migration across West Africa.
About 12.7 million internal disaster displacement movements were recorded in West Africa between 2009 and 2023, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, as cited by ECOWAS.
The World Bank’s Groundswell Africa analysis projects that up to 32 million people could become internal climate migrants by 2050 if adequate climate and development interventions are not implemented.
Participants also discussed translating the Working Group’s mandate into a 2027–2028 action plan, identifying priority activities, responsible institutions and funding proposals.
