The deputy governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme, has commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) special marshals for their efforts in traffic management and promoting road safety.

Mr Onyeme gave the commendation at the 2024 Special Marshal Zonal Conference and Commissioning of Special Marshals’ Secretariat in Asaba.

The theme of the conference was “Leveraging Technology for Improved Traffic Management and Enforcement: The FRSC Digitalised Approach.”

Mr Onyeme said road crashes have reduced, but the numbers remain unacceptably high, calling on commuters and transport unions to join hands in the awareness and prevention initiatives.

“There is still much more work to be done in terms of awareness, sensitisation and infrastructure to help mitigate this menace called traffic crashes on our roads.

“You should continually visit motor parks to dissuade drivers from taking alcohol or any substance capable of affecting their moods and psyches.

“You should also go to the grassroots to engage the traditional rulers and community leaders on ways to educate their people on measures to take to avoid road crashes,” he said.

The deputy governor urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to adhere to traffic rules, avoid overloading, and refrain from using phones while driving, among other factors bedevilling road safety in the country.

Stella Orakwe, an assistant corps marshal, said the building was a testament to the power of collaboration and community effort.

Kennedy Odafe, Delta State coordinator of the special marshal, said the secretariat would serve as a hub for training, planning, and operations.
