Delta assembly urges commission to engage ICT in revenue drive

The Delta House of Assembly has urged the Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC) to boost its revenue drive through the use of information and communication technology (ICT).
The assembly also urged the commission to draw up realistic budget and revenue targets in order to enhance its performance.
The assembly made the call following the recommendations by the House Committee on Public Account during its plenary on Wednesday in Asaba.
The committee chairman, James Augoye, said the assembly gave the suggestion after perusing the report of the ”Auditor-General (State) on the Accounts of DESOPADEC for the Year Ended 31st Dec. 2023.”
”Distinguished members, the committee in carrying out its assignment invited the chairman, managing director, and two executive directors, among others of the commission, to a technical session.
”The management of the commission threw more light on some areas before the committee.
”The audit report was carefully looked into, figures were scrutinised and the observations made formed the committee’s recommendations, ” he said.
He added, ”Distinguished members, our mandate was to conduct a thorough examination on the 2023 accounts of DESOPADEC audited reports.
”Having conducted our assignment in accordance with our mandate on review of the auditor-general’s reports, the committee wishes to recommend the following for your consideration and resolution.
”The commission should intensify their internally generated revenue efforts through the use of information communication technology as well as draw up realistic budget and revenue targets to enhance their future performance. ”
Consequently, the majority leader of the assembly, Emeka Nwaobi, moved a motion for the adoption of the report.
The motion, which was unanimously adopted by the Assembly, when put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Dennis Guwor, was seconded by Ferguson Onwo (PDP-Isoko South II).
