Deaf pedestrian killed as buses collide in Lagos

An overspeeding commercial minibus, on Sunday, collided with a minibus and crushed to death a pedestrian with hearing impairment who was waiting at a designated bus stop in Lagos State.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Taofiq Adebayo, in a statement on Sunday, said the overspeeding minibus had lost control before the crash.
Mr Adebayo said, “In a harrowing and unfortunate incident, a deaf pedestrian met a tragic and untimely demise while innocently awaiting a commercial bus at a designated stop along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, inward Maryland, adjacent to Temac Filling Station. The fatal collision involved two Suzuki mini commercial buses (Korope) bearing registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.
“Preliminary inquiries indicate that one of the vehicles, owing to reckless overspeeding, veered out of control and violently rammed into a stationary minibus before mercilessly mowing down the unsuspecting pedestrian.”
He said LASTMA, in demonstration of its swift crisis intervention in alignment with the United Nations Response Time, promptly arrived at the scene, cordoned off the affected area.
He added that officers from the Area F Police Division took custody of both vehicles for further investigation while officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the body of the victim.
Also confirming the crash, the special adviser to Governor Babjideo Sanwo-Olu on transportation, Sola Giwa, reiterated the need for commercial drivers to stop reckless driving and maintain their vehicles, especially their braking systems.
“Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and flagrant disregard for traffic laws constitute an existential threat to public safety. I implore all motorists to strictly operate within legal parameters to avert needless loss of human lives,” he stated.
He, therefore, warned drivers to abide by speed limits to safeguard lives and property because the Lagos’ intelligence transport system now monitors speed violations at Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
