Court remands unemployed cultist for unlawful possession of pistol

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of 27-year-old Suraju Anwalu in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for alleged possession of a pistol and being a member of a cult group.
The defendant, an unemployed man, resident at Mile 12, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, possession of firearms and belonging to an unlawful society.
The Magistrate, M. A. Adegbaye refused to take the plea of the defendant when the case was brought before the court and ordered the remand of the defendant.
Mr Adegbaye subsequently adjourned the case until March 27, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Supol Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the offences were committed on December 31, 2022, at Mile 12 area of Lagos State.
Mr Ogunleye said that a police patrol team intercepted the defendant on the road at Mile 12, and when he was searched a Berretta pistol was found in his possession.
The prosecutor said the defendant could not give satisfactory answers for being in possession of the pistol, and later confessed to be a member of an unlawful secret society.
The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Sections 512, 296 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
