Court remands man, 25, over alleged car snatching, possession of firearms

A Benin High Court on Wednesday remanded a 25-year-old man, Oluwadamilare Dele, in a correctional centre over alleged car snatching and possession of firearms.

The Prosecutor, Polycap Odion, told the court that the defendant was charged with conspiracy, illegal possession of a firearm, and armed robbery.

Mr Odion alleged that the defendant together with others at large committed the offence on March 9, 2025 in Benin.

He added that the defendant was arrested with a locally made, cut-to-size single-barrel gun and two live cartridges without a valid licence on March 19 between Iyaro and Urubi quarters in Benin City.

He stated, “At a gunpoint,  the defendant allegedly attacked and snatched  a Toyota Yaris vehicle with registration number BEN 770XF, belonging to Idemudia Luis Osarumen, and other PVC ceilings value yet to be ascertained.’’

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 3 (1), Section 6 (b)
of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

According to him, the offence is punishable under Section 1 (1) (2) (a)
of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The persecutor, in motion exparte, cited relevant sections and urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre for initial period of 14 days pending the legal advice from the office of the state Director of Public Prosecution.

The presiding judge, Justice Williams Azeigbemhin, who ordered that the suspect be remanded in Benin correctional centre, adjourned the case until April 18, 2025.
