Corporate America Lending executive Ron Cook indicted for defrauding Farmer MAC, others of $65 million

Ron Cook, a 58-year-old man from Fresno, California, is an executive of Corporate America Lending, a lending company allegedly used to carry out a $65 million fraud scheme.
Mr Cook was arrested at his office on Monday over allegations that he defrauded customers and investors.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, which announced the indictment, Mr Cook allegedly obtained at least $64 million through the scheme.
He was indicted on multiple federal charges, including making false statements to the federal government, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.
According to court records, CAL is a lending company based in Fresno, California, which originates loans for farmers, ranchers and other individuals working in the agricultural industry.
After originating the loans, the company sells interests in them to other investors, financial institutions and the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (Farmer MAC).
Farmer MAC is a U.S. government-backed company that provides affordable financial access to the agricultural industry.
Beginning in 2023, borrowers of a $58 million loan originated by Mr Cook and sold to a financial company sought to repay the loan through another financial company without the first lender’s knowledge.
In the process, Mr Cook allegedly deceived both the borrowers and the financial companies to obtain the $58 million repayment proceeds without the first financial company becoming aware of the transaction.
He allegedly intended to keep the money for himself.
When the first financial company discovered this alleged fraud, Mr Cook transferred the money to his friends and associates to conceal its location, which eventually formed the basis of the money laundering charges against him.
Apart from the alleged $58 million fraud, Mr Cook also defrauded his other customers by stealing their names to take out loans without their consent from Farmer MAC and selling non-existent loan interests to investors.
Through the alleged fraud scheme, Mr Cook obtained at least $64 million.
According to prosecutors, he used the money to finance his lifestyle, repay debts owed to some customers and investors who had discovered the fraud and threatened to file criminal charges against him, and made political donations.
If convicted, Mr Cook faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for making false statements to the federal government. He also faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count of wire fraud and money laundering.
Additionally, each aggravated identity theft charge carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence, which would run consecutively to any sentence imposed for the other offences.
