The Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Nimmyel, on Wednesday, said that the command intercepted 28 bags of cannabis sativa weighing over 756kg around Long Jetty, Ibeshe Beach, Lagos.

Mr Nimmyel, in an interview with journalists at NNS BEECROFT, said the interception of the illegal substance occurred in the early hours of Tuesday with the help of the Falcon Eye Alignment.

He, however, noted that no arrest was made as the culprits fled upon sighting the ship’s Quick Response Team.

He said, “Accordingly, the confiscated items have been handed over to National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. This is in accordance with Nigerian Navy Standard Operating Procedure for further investigation and possible prosecution.’’

The commander said that the success of the operation underscored the unwavering commitment of NNS BEECROFT to enforce the mandate of Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla.

Mr Nimmyel said, “The CNS is committed to ridding the maritime environment of all forms of crimes and criminality either singly or in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies. I warn perpetrators of illegal oil bunkering and illicit drugs to desist from such acts as we will not rest in pursuing and arresting all criminal elements operating within our area of operation.’’
