Cleric in court over alleged N7.6 million fraud

A 55- year-old Islamic cleric, Olaide Ajala, was charged before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, over alleged N7. 6 million fraud.
The defendant was charged on three – count bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing.
The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Salewa Hammed told the court that the defendant allegedly conspired together with others at large to commit the offence.
Ms Hammed alleged that the defendant obtained N7, 610, 000 from one Mujeeb Adebayo under the pretence of conducting prayers for him on his business problem which he knew to be false.
Ms said, “The defendant and his cohort were alleged to have run away after duping the complainant.’’
Ms Hammed alleged that the defendant stole the money and fraudulently converted it to his own use.
Ms Hammed said the offence was allegedly committed in June 2024 at the Academy area of Ibadan.
She said the offence is contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 ( 9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, M. M. Olagbenro admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
Ms Olagbenro said one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant.
She adjourned the matter till June 17, for hearing.
