A cleric and coordinator of Al-Ikhlas Madrasah, Ilorin, Kwara State, Yusuf Suleiman, has urged parents to encourage their children to learn the Holy Qur’an for righteous living.

He made this call on Saturday during the Annual Qur’anic Competition organised by Al-Ikhlas Schools and Madrasah, Ilorin.

Mr Suleiman advised parents to regularly assess their children’s performance at home by encouraging them to revise the Qur’an and correct any errors they make.

He warned against playing music or singing around children, whether at home or in vehicles, stating that it negatively affects Qur’an memorisation.

Mr Suleiman said that the learners in the competition participated based on the sections they had covered during their Qur’anic studies.

He added that each learner performed well and was eager to participate, though not all could be selected as winners.

According to him, those chosen as the top three in each class were among the best, while others also did well but needed to be more committed.

He thanked Allah for the opportunity to organise the Qur’anic competition and for making it a successful event.

Mr Suleiman also appreciated the school management and parents for their support, cooperation, and understanding.

A non-religious and Islamic teacher, Abdulwahab Abdulbasit, called on tutors to closely monitor learners to identify their weaknesses.

He said Islamic teachers should also evaluate themselves and reflect on what they teach to achieve better learning outcomes.

He stated, “The teachers need more training to grow in their profession and impart greater knowledge to students.’’

Mr Abdulbasit, who was one of the judges, observed that the students’ performance had improved and reflected quality teaching and better understanding of the Qur’an.

He urged learners to focus on memorisation, especially correct pronunciation, noting that though they met expectations, more effort was needed.

“This is the third time I have judged the Qur’anic competition at Al-Ikhlas Schools, Ilorin, and it has always been memorable. The learners are making great progress. This year’s performance surpassed that of the last competition I attended,” Mr Abdulbasit said.
