Chief imam of Ilorin, Muhammad Bashir, is dead

The chief imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, has passed away.
The cleric’s demise was confirmed in a Facebook post by the personal assistant to the Emir of Ilorin, Muritala Ibrahim, on Monday.
“Inna lillahi wahina illahi rajiun. The great imam. May Allah grant you an aljanat,” Mr Muritala wrote.
The popular cleric died at 75.
Born in 1950 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Mr Bashir rose through years of Islamic scholarship and service to become one of the most influential religious leaders in the state.
The deceased served as the 12th chief imam of the Ilorin Emirate, a position he held for over four decades following his appointment in 1983.
Mr Bashir was widely renowned for his understanding of Islamic teachings throughout his reign and for his consistent advocacy of peace, unity, and religious tolerance among Muslims and the wider society.
