The chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Joshua Akinyemiju, has urged the government to make and enforce policies that would protect women’s rights as valuable assets in Nigeria.

Mr Akinyemiju made the call on Monday in an interview with journalists in Ibadan in commemoration of the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

He urged all to look inwardly to see the positive role of women in homes, societies and respective cultures, which raised the need to value and stand for them against any form of injustice.

The CAN chairman said the bible places males and females on equal ground as spiritual beings, adding that there were differences in their God-given functions and responsibilities.

According to him, the function of a woman is carried out in submission to her husband.

Mr Akinyemiju noted that the theme of this year is a call for everyone to commit to uniting and advocating for non-violence against women.

“Women are valuable; they are a wonderful creation, and that is why they are special.

“On the whole, it can be summarised that women are valuable to God, His church, society and the family. Similarly, they have opinions and ideas that are equally valuable,” he said.

Mr Akinyemiju further maintains that women are worth listening to, and their input and creativity would continue to make a lot of difference in the family and the church.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is celebrated on November 25, and the theme for the 2024 celebration is “No Excuse. Unite to end violence against women.’’
