The regime of President Muhammadu Buhari has advocated for inter-ethnic and inter-religious marriages as a way to foster national unity among Nigerians.

In an interview in Abuja, Rauf Aregbesola, Minister of Interior, said part of the regime’s effort to ensure national unity was to promote marriages across ethnic lines.

“There is a need to encourage marriages across religions, nationality and across several divisions,” the interior minister said.

However, to achieve this, Mr Aregbesola said that it was imperative to establish more marriage centres.

“My desire is to have as many marriage registries as possible operated by private individuals but administered by the Federal Government.

“We inherited six Federal marriage centres based in the six geo-political zones and we have increased that to 20 now,” he said.

He supported the liberalisation of marriages and making the process easy for Nigerians to marry, integrate and promote unity.
