The Borno government has graduated 1,181 teachers under phase four of its teacher training programme aimed at enhancing the capacity and qualification of educators across the state.

The graduation ceremony took place on Friday at the Umar Ibn Ibrahim El-Kanemi College of Education, Science, and Technology (UIIECEST), Bama in Bama Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking at the event, the commissioner for education, science, technology, and innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, said the training was conducted under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, facilitated by Borno ministry of education, science, technology, and innovation.

Mr Wakilbe said the commitment of Gov. Babagana Zulum’s administration to education remains unwavering, as evidenced by the state’s continuous investment in teacher training and development.

He explained that the post training assessment was supervised by Babagana Gutti, vice chancellor, Borno State University, noting that out of the 878 teachers who attended the training, 810 passed successfully.

The commissioner also revealed that 133 teachers who had received mobilisation funds but failed to attend the programme, later returned on acknowledging the state government’s decision to implement minimum wage.

“The names of the 68 teachers who did not pass and those who failed to attend will be submitted to their respective Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) by Monday,” he announced.

Mr Wakilbe clarified that the current salary structure was inherited from previous administrations but assured that efforts were ongoing to address the issue.

The commissioner expressed appreciation to stakeholders and the UIIECEST staff for their commitment to the training programme.

He disclosed that phase five of the training programme “is scheduled to take place in Biu in March, with the goal of ensuring that teachers in Borno are all qualified.”
