Bauchi govt launches irrigation initiative to boost food security

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi has inaugurated the 2025 irrigation agriculture support programme to enhance food security and fast-track sustainable economic growth.
He said this on Wednesday during the inauguration of the programme at Zungur village in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state.
Represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, the governor said the programme was designed to enhance farmer support services during the dry season activities.
Mr Mohamned highlighted the importance of harnessing the abundant arable lands and natural resources to achieve all-year-round agricultural productivity.
He said the initiative would also address immediate farming challenges and secure the future of agriculture in the state.
“As part of the programme, the state government will distribute critical inputs to the farmers, including certified seeds, improved crop varieties, fertilisers and irrigation equipment,” he said.
Mr Mohammed also announced plans to distribute tractors and modern farm equipment to encourage agricultural mechanisation in the state.
While urging farmers to participate in the programme, Mr Mohammed called for collaboration with investors and financial institutions to expand agricultural mechanisation and enhance access to credit facilities and market opportunities.
Earlier, Iliyasu Gital, commissioner for agriculture, reaffirmed their commitment to farmer support services to achieve food security.
“Let us all unite to make this initiative a success. Go out, farm, and grow a brighter future,” he said.
