The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency has arrested four persons for allegedly violating environmental safety regulations.

The agency Director-General, Mahmud Bose, said this during an interview on Wednesday in Bauchi.

He said operatives of the agency apprehended the accused persons for allegedly using  tyres to process hides during the concluded Sallah celebrations in Bauchi metropolis.

Mr Bose said the move was part of proactive measures to protect public health and the environment during the festivities.

The director said the process of burning tyres released harmful chemicals such as dioxins and furans that caused respiratory infections and long-term environmental damage.

He said, “They were apprehended during routine surveillance using tyres to burn animal skins, a practice banned due to its serious health and environmental implications. They are set to appear before a mobile court for prosecution.’’

He said the agency also destroyed a large quantity of contaminated meat seized during the Sallah celebrations in the state.

He commended the people of the state for their compliance with the environmental regulations, adding that it was a positive step towards environmental sustainability.

Mr Bose reiterated commitment to enforce compliance with the environmental laws to safeguard public health and the environment.

According to Mr Bose, the agency works to improve air and water quality, proper waste management, and reduce exposure to environmental hazards.

“All critical in reducing disease burden, improving quality of life, and supporting sustainable development,” Mr Bose said.
