Barber jailed 15 months for stealing DVD players

A Jos Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, sentenced 24-year-old James Luka to 15 months in the correctional centre for breaking into a house and stealing two DVD players.
Mr Luka, a barber, was summarily tried and sentenced by Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos, after the convict pleaded guilty to the two-count charge breaking in and stealing.
In delivering his judgement, Ms Bokkos, however, granted the convict an option of N50,000 fine in lieu of the term in the correctional centre.
The magistrate also ordered Mr Luka to pay a compensation of N20,000 to the complainant, Daniel Yakubu, or spend an additional three months in jail making a total of 15 months if he defaulted.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Oct. 1, at the “A” Division Police Station by one Daniela Yakubu, the complainant.
Mr Gokwat said that the convict trespassed into the house of the complainant and stole two DVD players worth N20,000 before he was caught.
He said that the offence contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
