The police command in Oyo state has confirmed the death of Azeez Tajudeen, 40, following Wednesday’s attack on supporters of the Accord governorship candidate, Oriyomi Hamzat, in Ibadan.

The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the death in a statement on Thursday. He said the incident happened around the Molete area of Ibadan during a procession organised to welcome Mr Hamzat back home from the United Kingdom.

According to him, a complainant reported to the police that the group was attacked by suspected hoodlums shortly after leaving Molete while proceeding toward the Agidigbo office on Iwo Road.

“During the attack, one Azeez Tajudeen, aged 40, a native of Oke Amu in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, sustained a severe injury to his right eye.

“He was immediately rushed for medical attention and subsequently taken to State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was examined and confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” Mr Ayanlade said.

The police spokesperson said the police commissioner, Abimbola Olugbenga, had directed that the case be transferred to the command monitoring unit for investigation.

Mr Ayanlade urged political aspirants, party leaders, and event organisers to formally notify the command at least 48 hours before any planned gathering.

He said this would enable adequate security arrangements, prevent breaches of public peace, and safeguard participants and other members of the public.
