Arsenal beat Man City at Wembley, clinch 17th FA Community Shield title

Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 in a penalty shootout at the Wembley Stadium to win the 2023 FA Community Shield to begin the new season with silverware and in a confidence-boosting fashion after the Gunners lost the league title to today’s opponents towards the end of last season.
Both teams forced each other’s goalkeepers into a couple of saves in the opening minutes of the game, but neither of them had breakthroughs until the later part in the 77th minute, substitute Cole Palmer curled a left-footed shot into the net to put City upfront.
World Cup-style rule saw the match official add eight minutes of stoppage in the game, but a heads collision involving Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey meant more minutes were added again, giving Arsenal a chance to equalise through Leandro Trossard, whose effort was deflected past Ortega by Manuel Akanji, forcing the game into shootouts.
Arsenal scored all of their penalty kicks, but City only managed to put one into the net, with Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missing their kicks as the Gunners clinched their 17th FA Community Shield title, the first since 2020.
Both teams will now shift their focus on the new Premier League, scheduled to begin on Friday night, with Man City travelling to face Vincent Kompany-tutored Burley while Arsenal host Nottingham Forest at Emirates.
