APC expels Aregbesola over anti-party activities

Former minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has been expelled from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over allegations of anti-party activities.
Mr Aregbesola, a two-term former governor of Osun state, was expelled on Wednesday in a letter signed by the leadership of the APC.
In a copy of the letter titled Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” the former minister was alleged of breaching Article 21 of the APC constitution.
“At the end of the investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee. Having carefully reviewed the findings and recommendations, the SEC resolved to approve your immediate expulsion from the APC.
“The decision was predicated on clear evidence of your actions, which undermined the unity and integrity of the party. As a result, you are no longer a member of the APC and must refrain from holding yourself out as one or acting on behalf of the party in any capacity in any manner whatsoever,” an excerpt from the letter read.
The expulsion of Mr Aregbesola from the ruling party came barely three days after his group, Omoluabi Progressives, announced its decision to exit the APC.
In a statement on Sunday, the spokesperson for the group, Oluwaseun Abosede, said the decision to leave APC was reached by stakeholders across the 332 wards in the state at its meeting held in Ilesa, in Osun State.
It cited several reasons for the decision, which included allegations of suspension and expulsion of members without fair hearing, as well as the perceived neglect and denigration of the group within the APC structure.
The group, spearheaded by Mr Aregbesola, was accused of contributing to the APC’s loss in the 2022 governorship election with the emergence of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party.
