Anambra government decries rising violence against women

The Anambra government says the family court set up to checkmate violence against women and girls has received over 40 cases since its inception on August 15.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Children Development, Ify Obinabo, stated that the cases were among the 85 cases of family violence received by the ministry.
She disclosed that the ministry received over 100 cases of violence against women since her assumption of office. The commissioner said fellow women perpetrated the acts.
“Women fight against fellow women and even partner men to perpetrate the evil for material gains,” said the commissioner.
She stressed that women needed to be sensitised about the abuse of fellow women.
Ms Obinabo was addressing a stakeholders’ conference to change attitudes and practices that promote violence against women and girls.
She called for more sensitisation of women to avoid family violence in various degrees, as many women died in unavoidable deaths due to a lack of knowledge.
The commissioner charged women to report verbal, emotional or physical abuse to the ministry for proper attention.
