American soul singer Angie-Stone dies at 63 in Alabama auto crash

American Grammy-nominated soul singer and former member of the hip-hop group, The Sequence, Angie Stone, has passed away at 63 after a car accident.

The fatal car crash happened in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday, while she and her band were travelling to perform at a basketball tournament in Baltimore when their van overturned on Interstate 65 and was then hit by a Freightliner Cascadia truck. Eight other passengers were injured and taken to the hospital.

Her daughter, Diamond Stone, expressed mourned her mother’s passing on Facebook, stating, “My mommy is gone.”

Angie Stone was born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina. She grew up singing gospel music in church, which laid the foundation for her soulful vocal style.

Her rise to fame began in the late 1970s when she co-founded The Sequence, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups. The Sequence released their debut single, “Funk You Up,” which became a hit and remains one of the earliest rap songs to hit mainstream success.

After The Sequence disbanded, Stone transitioned into R&B and neo-soul, gaining global recognition in the late 1990s.

Her debut solo album, “Black Diamond” (1999), was critically acclaimed and featured the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” She followed up with “Mahogany Soul” (2001), which included one of her most iconic songs, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”

Throughout her career, Stone received three Grammy nominations for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album with two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.

She collaborated with artistes such as D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Snoop Dogg further showcasing her influence in the industry.

She also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “The Hot Chick” and “Ride Along,” as well as on Broadway. She had two children, a daughter, Diamond Stone, from her marriage to Rodney Stone (also known as Lil’ Rodney), and a son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II, from her relationship with singer D’Angelo. She also had two grandchildren.
