The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State University of Education.

The parliament passed the bill after its deliberation and adoption of a report by Kenim Onofiok, the chairman of the House Committee on Education.

In her presentation, Ms Onofiok said the university would provide high-quality teacher-education programmes for Akwa Ibom.

She further said that the university would offer opportunities to Akwa Ibom indigenes seeking admission into degree-awarding institutions.

“Students are no longer interested in registering for the three-year NCE programmes offered by colleges of education,” she said.

The motion for the adoption of the bill was moved by the leader of the House, Sunday Johnny, and was supported by the deputy chief whip, Sampson Idiong.

The speaker, Udeme Otong, directed the clerk, NsikakAbasi Orok, to send a copy of the bill to the governor for assent.
