Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to embrace the culture of giving back to society and being selfless to create a better country.
Mr Abubakar made the call at the launch of a book titled “Steps, Strides and Glides’’ by Ini Usoro, a retired director of road maintenance and management service at the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in Abuja on Saturday.
Represented by Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju Oyename, director of air engineering of the Nigerian Air Force, Mr Abubakar urged Nigerians to positively impact their communities.
“One of the legacies we need to think of in every field of endeavour is about what we can give back to the system, not just what we can take from the system.
“This is because if it is all about what can I take? We are going to take everything, and there will be nothing left for the younger generation.
“So we need to imbibe the culture of what we are going to give back to the system, and I see this book as giving back to the system, and it is something to be encouraged,” he said.
Ms Usoro said it was an awesome feeling to have been able to impact lives by sharing knowledge.
“I was nearing my retirement age, having spent about 28 years in the civil service; I just kept asking myself, how do I leave my footprints in the sands of time? What can I do that will live beyond me?
“I just tried to bring everything together using my own experiences to chart a path of success, and like I keep telling people, when I hear it is impossible, I see possibility.
“This is because I strongly believe that what you believe in and aim to do, if you are focused with perseverance and determination, you will definitely get there,” she said.
